Creative Writing Workshop
My Family Story: Everyone has a story, whether it’s your own or your ancestors. Writing your family history so people will want to read it means pushing past the dry facts to craft a compelling narrative. In this workshop, we'll examine a powerful piece of family storytelling - James McBride's The Color of Water: A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother. We'll also practice techniques such as writing descriptive events from your ancestor's lives or creating a character profile based on a relative.
Instructor Kelly Jean Fitzsimmons is an award-winning essayist, playwright, and an adjunct writing instructor at York College. She also produces No, YOU Tell It! (www.noyoutellit.com) - a reading series that "switches-up" the storytelling. Each NYTI storyteller writes a true-life tale and then flips scripts with a partner to present each other's story.
