Chip cookie bakery in Astoria, Queens creates creative cookies.

This month, we're proud to present the Bread & Grains issue—dedicated to all manner of doughs, dosas and baked desserts made in Queens. To coincide with the print issue (you'll be able to pick up a print copy very soon!), every weekday throughout the month of February, we're featuring a different bakery in the borough. Some are old standbys, and some are new and on the rise, but each one reflects the diverse and independent spirit of Queens.

Astoria gets credit for the genesis of Chip—an over-the-top cookie company poised to take the city by storm. The brainwave of two longtime friends longing to re-create the nostalgic treats from their childhood, the ball got rolling when they challenged each other to make the greatest cookie ever. The challenge morphed into a full-blown bakery in 2017. In that time, they’ve added two more Queens locations and a pair of Manhattan outposts to their roster, launched an ice cream shop (the specialty? Ice cream cookie sandwiches, of course) and expanded their stable of flavors from four to 19.

Baked fresh every day from all-natural ingredients, the chewy, hubcap-sized creations (frequently compared to Levain’s) take classic chocolate chip as a starting point. And they go off the rails—in the most delightfully indulgent way, of course—from there. Most boast gooey fillings and come in flavors like Blueberry Cheesecake, Nutella Sea Salt, Rainbow, Red Velvet, Lucky Charms, Hot Fudge Sundae and Snickersdoodle, oozing forth with warm, exploded candy.
